Romantic night at home - for Valentine's or whenever

time-starved_goddess_mom's picture

I love Valentine's Day, but I really don't like how crazy restaurants are on this day. So, I typically do something quick, yet romantic at home (If it's steak, Jeff does the cooking - love that!)

This time, I'm sharing my quick and easy ravioli that I made on Arizona Midday today. Put the kids to bed early or let them eat in the family room to watch a favorite movie, just this once. :)

Here's what you need, a ravioli package. My favorite is a sun-dried tomato, chicken and cheese. But you can do whatever you like.
Buy a jar of tomato & basil sauce and alfredo sauce....simmer each. I then add the tomato sauce to the alfredo, just so that I get the right chunkiness and color. The ravioli is made in about 10 minutes and presents nicely on a plate.

I usually add a salad - a spring mix with vinaigrette and open a bottle of wine. I'm not a wine snob, so I drink what I like. And that's usually a cab. My favorite of late is Simi. I also like a good sauvignon blanc.

Since I'm trying to be better about dessert, I'm taking some french vanilla yogurt and adding fresh berries. If you want a little indulgence, add granola or whipped cream.

Make it romantic with candles and guitar music. Then after, snuggle up and watch a movie such as "Titanic" or "Gone With the Wind."

Then enjoy!

That's funny you just posted

That's funny you just posted this. I'm planning on doing a nice romantic stay at home dinner this year also. I'm going to ask my mom to babysit and prepare something special for my hubby! With kids, work and everyday life, V-day on a weekday is just to crazy! Another great wine to try sometime (especially since you like reds) is Menage a Trois. I love the white blend, but I don't care for red that much and even so the red is really good (about $10-15 a bottle).

Thanks... The sauvignon

Thanks...

The sauvignon blancs I've come to like lately are Zeal, which is from New Zealand. It's light and fruity, but not overwhelmingly sweet or heavy. Another I like is The Jibe, also from New Zealand. It's a little more golden in color and has a bolder taste. I think both are in that $12-$15 range at Sam's Club.

I've never done wine tasting classes. I just like what I like, and I try to taste different types when I can. I don't like too sweet, but I do like a rose that my husband thinks of as a little sweet. It's Angove's Nine Vines. It's been a while since I had it (summer), but I used to get for just over $10 at Sam's Club. It's light tasting, so I like for hot days.

Oh, and for dessert...if calories don't matter. Put some berries in with a butter pecan icecream, and mmmm. It's good.

I'll have to try your suggestions as well. I too have no experience in wine tasting, I drink what I like and leave it at that. Your suggestions sound right up my likings though!

I love romantic nights at home. It's too bad my mom lives in another state. But I'm planning chicken nuggets, veggies and ice cream for the kids and they'll take over the family room watching SpongeBob or something like that.

I'm thinking of calling for take out...serving it on nice dishes, pouring some champagne (I like that Chandon brut, costs about $15...it's actually quite tasty and not as expensive as White Star, $32ish) and snuggling up to some movie. Maybe I'll pull out my husbands Batman movie with Adam West in it...it's not romantic, but I know he loves watching it. And he likes it when I watch too. It's amusing.
